"Britton" was illiterate, and his name is spelled several
different ways throughout hi life. When he was 17 he volunteered toserve in the war of 1812. In 1819 a
pension was filed, but denied, claiming Britton had
deserted in 1816. His deserting was attributed to the
fact he couldn't read or write , (Britton) believing when everyone else left, it was time for him to leave
also.
